Friday Night Rundown (2/12/21)

Dayton, Ohio — A lot of conference titles were finally decided on Friday night as Botkins, Anna, Legacy Christan, and Minster were all crowned as conference champs.

Centerville swept Wayne as they defeated them for the second time in the regular season. When Wayne defeated Centerville twice in the regular season last year, the Elks got their revenge with a blowout win the playoffs. Will the same thing happen this year?

Buzzer beaters were everywhere Friday. Josh Tolliver carried Springfield to another win with a clutch shot over Northmont. Nolan Berning led Fort Loramie to hold on late and Will Reittinger hit his unconvential shot to lift Bethel over Ansonia.

Tom House leads the Elks with 21 points and Rich Rolf pulled down a game sealing offensive rebound with 7 seconds left as the Elks sweep Wayne in the regular season. The Warriors were led by Prophet Johnson who continues to show why he deserves to be the GWOC player of the year as he dropped 25 points in the loss. Sophomore Lawrent Rice had 17 and Gabe Cupps had 15 for Centerville.

McNicholas wins their first GCL Co-Ed title since 2018 with their win over Carroll on Friday. The Rockets were led by Caden Conrad who had 23 points in the exciting win.

Anthony Ruffolo drops 21 points, but the Knights lose a tough one on senior night to Badin. The Rams look to build some momentum with this win before their first round tournament matchup against Roger Bacon.

Anna picks up a huge win on the road at Jackson Center as the Rockets now hold a share of the SCAL title.

Josh Tolliver plays the hero again for Springfield as he hits the game winner with just 5 seconds left to lift the Wildcats over Northmont. Tolliver hit the game winner in Springfield’s big win over Wayne last week as well.

Springboro High School

Springboro freshman Maxim Butler scored all 11 of his points in the fourth quarter as Springboro picks up a big non-conference win over Troy. The Panthers will face Springfield in the first round of the tournament and this win is a good sign for the Panthers to compete in that interesting matchup.

Minster clinches the MAC title with their win over Coldwater. This marks the first outright conference title in Minster program history.

Botkins ends their historic regular season with a win at Russia and a share of the SCAL title. The Trojans were led by Jacob and Carter Pleiman who each had 12 points. Russia missed the last second shot as Botkins holds on and will be SCAL champions.

Nolan Berning hits the game winning three with just seconds left as Fort Loramie takes down Fairlawn and improves to 14-7 on the season.

Will Reittinger wins it at the buzzer for Bethel as the Bees steal a conference game from Ansonia in the final seconds.

Legacy Christian senior Jonathan Riddle scored his 1,000th point last night in the Knights’ win over Miami Valley. That win seals Legacy Christian’s MBC conference title. Their first MBC title since 2019. Riddle was also named the Metro Buckeye Conference player of the year this morning and head coach Mark Erwin was named the MBC coach of the year as well.

Emmanuel Christian senior Jason Channels scored his 1,000th career point on Friday night but the balanced scoring attack from the Eagles was too much as Parker Penrod, Ben Major, Lucas Day, and Zach King combine for 41 of their 54 points.

Milton-Union sophomore Blake Brumbaugh continues to impress as he had 23 points on Friday night. He’s averaging 19 points on the season and is one of the top players in the SWBL.

Tyler Galluch drops 20 points as he went 7/8 from the field. The sophomore also pulled down 11 rebounds in the Irish’s 77-37 win over Madison Plains.

Dayton Christian junior Devin Drier pours on 25 points as the Warriors move past Middletown Christian and improve to 13-7 on the season.

Jacob Roeth finished with 33 points and Nick Prince had 22 for Miami East as the Vikings pickup a big win over Newton.

Layne Sarver and the Patriots finish their regular season 22-0 as Tri-Village downs Covington to go perfect in CCC play. Their next game will be on the 23rd as East Dayton Christian forfeited their opening tournament game.

Top Under-the-Radar guards who have shined this season

Dayton, Ohio– The Dayton area has always been known for good guard play. Many guys have caught my eye this season who haven’t been getting the recognition they deserve. Here is my list of the best under-the-radar guards who you need to keep your eye out on!

(In no particular order)

Jonathan Riddle/ 2021/ 6’5″ G/ Legacy Christian– Riddle doesn’t get much recognition playing in the Metro Buckeye Conference, but Riddle can flat out score the rock. Riddle can score from all three levels and uses his size to hit tough shots. Riddle is leading Legacy Christian to an 11-3 record and a tie for first place in the Metro Buckeye Conference. Riddle is averaging 19 PPG to go along with 3 AST. Riddle has had multiple 30 games and is shooting an impressive 85% from the FT line. Riddle is definitely someone college coaches should keep on their radar.

AJ Eller/ 2021/ 6’0″ G/ Brookville– Eller is one of the best scoring PG’s in the area. Eller has already had ten 20 point scoring games so far this season. Eller joined the 1,000th point club on January 16 against Twin Valley South. Eller is a knockdown shooter from deep with a very high basketball IQ. Another 2021 prospect college coaches should keep their eye on.

Antoine Jacobs/ 2022/ 6’2″ G/ Northridge– Jacobs was a name unknown to the area prior to this season. That has changed completely. Jacobs is another guard that can score from all three levels and uses his strong frame really well to attack the rim and finish through contact. Jacobs has had two 30 point games, including a 39 point performance against Dixie. Jacobs is also a very good rebounder for the guard spot. Expect Jacobs to be a top 2022 prospect in the Dayton area as he continues to develop.

Blake Brumbaugh/ 2023/ 6’1″ G/ Milton Union– Video surfaced on social media of the 2023 guard doing a windmill dunk and making it look easy before the season. Not too many people knew Brumbaugh’s name, but Brumbaugh has had a very nice year for the Bulldog’s averaging 18 PPG to go along with 5 Reb. Brumbaugh is just scratching the surface and will continue to develop. Look for the sophomore guard to have a big year on the AAU circuit playing with the Mid Ohio Pumas.

AJ Leen/ 2023/ 6’1″ G/ Archbishop Alter– When most people think of Alter, Jacob Conner and Ryan Chew first come to mind, but Leen has been the most consistent player for the Knights. Leen has a high basketball IQ and lets the game come to him. Can knockdown shots from deep, finishes around the rim well, and has a nice mid-range game. Moves without the ball really well. Has quick feet and is a very good defender. Leen is the X-factor for the Knights and will have to step-up even more with Ryan Chew out for the remainder of the season due to OHSAA transfer rules. Leen is a 2023 prospect who has a very bright future.

Alex Ball/ 2021/ 5’11” G/ Miamisburg– Ball is a complete all-around player and has had a really nice season for Miamisburg who has surprised a lot of people this year. Ball is everything you want in a PG- can knockdown shots, finish at the rim, and a good passer. I was really impressed with Ball’s high basketball IQ in their game against Lebanon. Ball will continue to have to play at a high level if Miamisburg wants to make a run in March.

Carson Seemann/ 2021/ 6’3″ G/ Archbishop McNicholas– Seemann is a high-level player out of the Cincy area from McNick. Seemann’s size allows him to see over the defense and has great court vision. Has great lift on his jumper and hits really tough shots. Seeman shoots the ball well from deep and has a solid handle. Plays with great poise. Definitely a name to get familiar with.

Kohl Todd/ 2021/ 5’9 G/ Waynesville– Todd is a pure scorer at the guard spot for Waynesville. Todd has unlimited range and can get hot quickly. Does a really good job getting to the FT line. Todd is shifty with the ball in his hand and has a variety of finishes around the rim. Todd continues to put up big numbers but will need more help if Waynesville wants to make a run come March.

Dre’sean Roberts/ 2023/ 6’1″ G/ Piqua– Roberts is an explosive guard who gets to the rim well. Not much of an outside shooter, but uses his quickness to get to the paint and make plays. One of the top scorers in the Miami Valley League at 17 PPG. Expect to see more of Roberts as he continues to lead Piqua.

Ronald Smith/ 2022/ 6’1″ G/ Thurgood Marshall– Smith has bursted onto the scene this year with his stellar play for the Cougars. Smith has good size and can really shoot the rock. Shifty guard who can get to his spots and hit shots. Finishes at the rim well. Smith has had multiple 20 point games for Thurgood. Expect Smith to continue to play at a high level and help bring Thurgood back into the picture of one of the top teams in DPS.

Casey Keese/ 2022/ 5’9″ G/ Bethel– Keese has the ball on a string and is a great passer. Good shooter from deep, has a nice floater, and an overall really good feel for the game. Keese is a tough match-up for the opposition with his ability to knock down shots or take you off the dribble as Keese is very shifty. Keese is a 2022 prospect that college coaches should keep their eye on.

Jakob Reed/ 2021/ 6’0 G/ Stebbins– Although we haven’t seen much from Reed this season due to Stebbins only playing four games thus far, Reed, in my opinion, plays with the most toughness in the area. Can score from all three levels, but is very good at getting to the rim and finishing through contact. Has a good handle and doesn’t get rattled. Fierce competitor and loves the game. No doubt a college prospect. Expect for Reed to have a big rest of his senior year for Stebbins.

Caleb Maurer/ 2023/ 6’0″ G/ Fort Loramie– Maurer is well-known on the AAU scene, but is a young guard that will make a lot of noise at Fort Loramie over the next few years. Maurer can really shoot the rock and has a overall good feel for the game. Maurer is averaging 10 PPG and will be a key piece for Fort Loramie. Keep your eye out on Maurer as he is returning from injury and will be a big time player for years to come in the SCAL.

Milton-Union blows out Arcanum in second half

Milton-Union freshman guard Blake Brumbaugh
Milton-Union junior guard Sam Case
Milton-Union senior guard Nathan Brumbaugh
Milton-Union senior forward Brandon Lavy

Clayton, Ohio — On Feburary 11th, Arcanum beat Milton-Union by 11. So when the two teams pulled each other to play in the first round of the tournament, it was safe to say the Trojans felt pretty confident heading into this game.

Milton-Union made it clear that they didn’t want any part of Carter Gray. The Bulldogs tightly face guarded him most of the first half making Arcanum give the ball up to other guards. Blake Brumbaugh got off to a nice start hitting his shots early. Arcanum drew within one after a Grant Delk and-one but Milton-Union extended the lead after Sam Case hit a corner three. Things got heated after a tie-up between Grant Delk and Justin Randall. Both players stared each other down and a technical was assessed to Randall. Milton-Union still led 12-10 at the end of the first.

Carter Gray finally got on the board with a jumper to open the second quarter. Sam Case hit his third three of the game to put the Bulldogs up 19-12. Then he would drive to the basket and finished to put them up 23-14. Case then dished a pass to Nathan Brumbaugh who stroked a three and then a full-court pass to Brandon Lavy which put Milton up 28-14. They would add on some more to make their halftime lead 31-14.

Jake Goubeaux hit a three for Arcanum to start the third quarter, but Nathan Brumbaugh responded with an NBA range three of his own. The Bulldogs would then go up by 20 after a Blake Brumbaugh steal which led to and-one at the other end. Blake Brumbaugh would get a pair of scores before Brandon Lavy hit a three to put Milton-Union up 48-22 going into the fourth quarter.

Nathan and Blake Brumbaugh would each hit another three and Milton-Union continued their dominant night. Arcanum’s all-time leading scorer Carter Gray would check out one final time in the orange and black as he left the court and was subbed out with around 3 minutes to play. This obviously wasn’t the ending Gray wanted or expected. Milton-Union went on to win 61-25.

Blake Brumbaugh finished with a game-high 14 points, Sam Case had 13 along with three three-pointer’s, Nathan Brumbaugh had 11 and Brandon Lavy had 10 points for the bulldogd. Arcanum was led by Jake Goubeaux who had 6 points and Carter Gray and Cade Brubaker who each finished with 4.

Milton-Union will advance to the sectional final at Northmont as they will play Middletown Madison on Saturday at 6 pm. This is a rematch of a game Madison won earlier in the season at Milton-Union.

Cedarville commit Grant Whisman drops 37

Madison senior forward Grant Whisman
Milton-Union senior guard Nathan Brumbaugh
Milton-Union freshman guard Blake Brumbaugh

West Milton, Ohio — The 10-3 #4 Milton-Union Bulldogs hosted Cedarville University commit Grant Whisman and the 13-2 #5 Middletown Madison Mohawks. Milton was looking for a chance to claim the top spot in the SWBL Buckeye division with a win in this game and Madison was looking to continue their dominant season and beat the Bulldogs to gain first place in the SWBL.

Milton-Union got off to a 4-0 start but Grant Whisman responded nailing a three in the face of the defender. Whisman continued to play well as he hit a jumper and then hit a corner three to put Madison up 10-4. Jake Edwards got a pair of layups and suddenly Madison was up 16-4. Senior Nathan Brumbaugh was not ready for Milton to be out of it already as he drilled a corner three. The score at the end of the 1st was 16-7, all Mohawks early.

Freshman Blake Brumbaugh got the second quarter started off with a jumper and then Nathan Brumbaugh got a steal and score to cut the deficit to 5. Whisman electrified the small but present Madison student section with a dunk and then extended the lead to 21-11 with another contested three. Brandon Lavy hit a corner three for Milton-Union, and that would be your halftime score as Middletown Madison led Milton-Union 21-14 after one half of basketball.

Whisman began the second half with a bang as slammed home a dunk to put Madison up 9. The Bulldogs responded though, Blake Brumbaugh hit a mid-range jumper and gave a nice inside pass to Nathan Brumbaugh to cut the Mohawk lead to 7. Right when it looked like Milton had a chance to tie the game, Whisman hit a corner three to extend the lead back to 6. Nathan Brumbaugh responded with a contested three of his own. A pair of layups including an and-one from Whisman made it a 9 point game again. Milton-Union junior Justin Randall got an and-one of his own to put the Bulldogs back in the game. The freshman Blake Brumbaugh then went to work and got an and-one as Milton-Union cut the deficit back down to 5 points at the end of the quarter as Madison led 40-35 heading into the 4th.

Nathan Brumbaugh started off the final quarter with a three from NBA range to cut it to a 3 point game. Whisman and the Brumbaugh duo traded buckets down the stretch until with around 1:30 to play, senior Tristan Sipple drilled a dagger to put Madison up 8. Whisman finished off whatever the Bulldogs had left in their tank with a transition layup. Milton-Union was defeated 59-45 by Middletown Madison. The score doesn’t show what kind of game and fight the Bulldogs put up as they competed with a top D-III opponent.

Grant Whisman led Madison with 37 points and 9 rebounds as he powered the Mohawks in the win. Jake Edwards also finished with 9 points for Madison. Milton-Union was led by Nathan Brumbaugh who had 20 points as he went 8/13 from the field. Freshman Blake Brumbaugh had 8 points, which is below his 15 points that the freshman guard usually averages.

Middletown Madison has out of conference games against Bethel and Middletown Christian next week and Milton-Union has games against SWBL foe Brookville and CCC opponent Tri-County North. Both of those games will be good tests for Madison.
