Week 5 Power Rankings Breakdown

Dayton, Ohio — Centerville and Fairmont both looked dominant this week as the Elks had two massive blowout wins while Fairmont knocked off Alter in a battle. Shawnee and Botkins went down to the wire as the Trojans show they have what it takes to be an elite team again this year.

Alter blows past their rivals as Ruffolo and Conner each go for 21

Kettering, Ohio — After suffering a tough first loss earlier in the week, Alter bounced back nicely with a blowout 61-44 victory over their conference rivals Chaminade Julienne. Anthony Ruffolo and Jacob Conner each exploded for 21 points as the Knights roll to 5-1 on the year.

The Alter Knights were on top of the world following their 3-0 start with huge wins over Homestead who featured Purdue commit Fletcher Loyer. Moeller who had a Penn State commit in Evan Mahaffey and then Oakwood who should be a top contender in DII this year led by Will Maxwell.

But a tough loss in the Battle of Kettering to Fairmont brought Alter back to the ground as they suffered their first loss of the season. Before that matchup on Tuesday night, the last time the Knights lost was to their rivals in Chaminade Julienne.

That loss occurred in the very same gym on Shroyer Road that their matchup today would take place. Alter looked to secure a revenge win, but the Eagles of Chaminade Julienne stood in their way.

Marshall commit Jacob Conner has become of the more talked about players in the Dayton area, but after a breakout postseason to finish off his freshman campaign and a solid summer, CJ’s Jonathan Powell has also emerged as a D1 prospect. His play garnered the attention of the University of Dayton coaching staff as he picked up an offer from them in November.

Anthony Ruffolo got Alter started on the scoring side with a corner trey. Then Jacob Conner showed off his versatility as he split through the CJ defenders for the layup and then blocked Kylan Tucker twice on the very next possession. A finger roll at the buzzer put Alter out in front 16-5 at the end of the first.

Jacob Conner took over in the second quarter as he led the Knights to a 30-18 halftime lead. The Marshall commit was scoring from everywhere as he pulled up from three in a defenders face and drove to the basket with ease. Jonathan Powell and Evan Dickey kept the Eagles relatively close as they each hit three pointers but CJ still face a 12 point halftime deficit.

Conner extended the second half lead to 20 points on a two handed dunk after Ruffolo and A.J. Leen both hit wide-open corner threes. Anthony Ruffolo capped off the third quarter with a loud and-one. Justin Morah’s three before the buzzer cut the Eagles’ deficit to just under 20 points as Alter led 52-34 heading into the fourth.

CJ showed signs of a comeback late but a backdoor cut and score from Ruffolo and then a three from Ruffolo off of a Jacob Conner screen put the dagger in the Eagles. Alter ended up running away late and winning 61-44 to improve to 4-1 on the season.

Jacob Conner and Anthony Ruffolo each had 21 points on the night to lead Alter. A.J. Leen had 9 points as well and Gavin Geisel had 6 points. Ryan Chew only finished with 4 points but made his presence known as he finished with 5 assists and set his teammates up all night long.

Evan Dickey had a strong first half and ended with 13 points while Justin Morah contributed the most in the second half and had 12 points in the loss.

Alter will have the next week off before heading down to South Carolina for a three game stretch with some pretty tough competition. CJ will face Newark at Mount Vernon Nazarene before heading down south to San Antonio for a three game stretch as well to cap before heading home to start the new year.

Week 2 Power Rankings Breakdown

Dayton, Ohio — After some big showdowns on Friday and Saturday, the Week 2 rankings have a little bit of shifting to do. Botkins picked up a big SCAL victory over Jackson Center to start off the year. Trotwood came back from behind to defeat CJ and Alter sealed a huge win against Homestead off of a buzzer beater.

Trotwood pulls off a comeback victory over CJ

Dayton, Ohio — Two very storied programs clashed on Saturday night as Chaminade Julienne hosted Trotwood-Madison for an out of conference bout. A 25 point performance for Trotwood sophomore Tim Carpenter helped lead the Rams all the way back for the eventual 79-76 victory after trailing the entire game.

CJ comes into this season fresh off of a regional title from last season. Sophomore Jonathan Powell was a big reason why the Eagles had a late surge. As just a freshman, he had 25 points against Alter in the tournament last year. CJ did graduate A.J. Solomon and Dan Nauseef who were both big pieces of their state semi-final run, but they return an experienced group into this year.

Trotwood returns a very young group this year. They graduated their leading scorer Anthony McComb who dominated his lone season with the Rams. They will play a lineup filled with sophomores this year as Delamarr Blanton, Tim Carpenter, and Will Yates will round out a deep 2024 class that the Rams have.

CJ got off to a quick start as Luke Chandler drilled a corner three. Then following a Josiah Bowman block, Chandler hit his second three of the quarter to give CJ the early 6-1 lead.

After some back and forth scoring, Jonathan Powell got a chasedown for the Eagles but Will Yates was able to put it back up for and-one. Yates was then fouled on his three point attempt at the buzzer. After going 3/3 from the line, the Rams led 20-18 heading into the second quarter.

Josiah Bowman scored six straight points for CJ to open up the second quarter. This helped CJ grab a 30-22 lead. Evan Dickey then scored a pair of baskets but a three at the buzzer from Will Yates cut CJ halftime lead down to six as they led 38-32.

Josiah Bowman helped CJ maintain a double digit lead in the third quarter. Trotwood began to go on a run however, as Tim Carpenter was controlling the offensive glass. Carpenter scored five straight times to tie the game. Will Yates then gave the Rams the lead off of a three to end the quarter as Trotwood led 56-53.

The Rams would extend the lead to seven off of a Mykell Morton layup. Powell would drain a corner three to bring CJ back within three. Then just moments later, Jonathan Powell found the bottom of the net again from the exact same spot to cut the deficit to three points. Delamarr Blanton would respond right back as he hit a step-back three to put the Rams back up big six.

CJ got back within two points after a pair of scores from Evan Dickey and then a bucket from Luke Chandler. Dickey and Mike Smith would trade baskets. Down 75-72 with 50 seconds left, Dickey pocked the ball loose and forced a jump ball. This would give the Eagles a chance to tie the game with under a minute left.

Dickey decided to drive to the rim instead of attempting a three and his layup was too strong. CJ was forced to foul and Trotwood went 1/2 at the line. This gave the Eagles hope as they trailed 76-72 with 30 seconds remaining. Josiah Bowman cut the deficit to 76-74 with his layup and then CJ used their last timeout.

Will Yates then was fouled and sent to shoot two free-throws in the double bonus. Yates went 1/2 at the line got extend the lead to 77-74 but he opened the door for CJ. Dickey was fouled while trying to receive the inbounds pass so he went to the line and drained both free throws. With just 15 seconds left, CJ was forced to immediately foul.

Delamarr Blanton was able to knockdown two clutch free throws in his first career varsity game. This gave Trotwood a 79-76 lead with 9 seconds to go.

The Eagles inbounded it to their star sophomore Powell. He dribbled quickly up the court but his off-balanced attempt to tie was just short. Evan Dickey’s three was after the buzzer but it was too strong as Trotwood-Madison held on and defeated Chaminade Julienne 79-76 to open up the season.

Tim Carpenter had a game high 25 points for Trotwood-Madison. The sophomore forward dominated the glass in the second half and was a big reason why the Rams were able to comeback in this game. Will Yates added on 17 points for Trotwood as they improve to 1-0. Their next game will be at home on Tuesday against Stivers.

Evan Dickey led the Eagles with 20 points and steals. Jonathan Powell finished with 19 points, Josiah Bowman 16 points and 10 rebounds and Luke Chandler had 10 points with a pair of threes. The Eagles will look to bounce back on Tuesday when they face Thurgood Marshall.

Week 1 Power Rankings Breakdown

Dayton, Ohio — This week will mark another new season for high school basketball in the Dayton area. Dayton crowned two state champions last year as Botkins and Centerville both won their first state titles in school history.

This article will break down the Preseason Power Rankings that were released yesterday across our social media platforms. These rankings will be released on a weekly basis throughout the season.

1)Centerville | 0-0 (0-0, GWOC) |

It’ll come as a shock to no one that Centerville comes in at number one in our D1 power rankings. The Elks return their D1 trio of Indiana commit Gabe Cupps, Florida State commit Tom House, and Rich Rolf who just recently announced he would be reopening his recruiting process. The Elks return one of the best teams in the state and are nationally ranked to begin the season. They will face a gauntlet of a schedule as they face five prep schools and other Ohio powerhouses like Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary and Moeller. With the majority of their state championship roster returning, it should be another dominant year for the Elks.

Some might be surprised to see Franklin this high up, but there are no surprises with the talent the Wildcats have returning. The duo of Nate Paarlberg and Noah Rich mixed with the three point shooting from Isaiah Bales will be overpowering in the SWBL this year. The Wildcats have also compiled a solid out-of-conference schedule as they’ll face Lakota West, Butler, Belmont, Lebanon, Greeneview, Edgewood, Thurgood Marshall, and Springboro all this season. The culture that Coach Bales has instilled and the obvious chemistry this team has will make for another great year as Franklin went 20-2 (12-0, SWBL) last season.

Led by the duo of Adam Duvall and Gabe Phillips, Beavercreek will have a chance to do something special this season. The Beavers went 7-15 last year in the regular season and finished 6th in the GWOC. Despite all that, ‘Creek made it all the way to the District Semifinal’s before falling to the eventual state champion Centerville Elks. Beavercreek had multiple players step up last year as Kyle Putnam made a big leap and was one of the key contributors by the end of the season. They return a solid cast of role players that gained crucial varsity experience last year as this Beavercreek team should make some noise in the GWOC this season.

Due to COVID, Fairmont was only able to play 14 games last season. Heading into Kenny Molz’s third year at Fairmont, this group has really started to come together. Led by the duo of Anthony Johnson and Dasan Doucet, Fairmont returns a lot of their team from last year as Jamison Rountree, Cadyn Hower, and Eli Sherwood should all be big varsity contributors this season. The Firebirds will open up at the Benner Field House Classic on Friday when they battle Westland on Friday.

Wayne graduated Malcolm Curry, Cam Fancher and the GWOC player of the year Prophet Johnson. Big man Elijah Brown will also not be playing this season as he’s committed to play football in the fall for Alabama. The Warriors will lean on junior 4-star Lawrent Rice who has been highly talked about since his freshman season. This will be Rice’s first chance to truly be the face of the team. Notre Dame football commit Aamil Wagner will be returning and Miami (OH) football commit Adam Trick will also be joining the team to help bring some more size to Wayne.

The Alter Knights will return one of the more talented squads in the Dayton area this season. Headlined by Marshall commit Jacob Conner and the talented guard tandem of Ryan Chew, A.J. Leen, Anthony Ruffolo, and Gavin Geisel. Most of those players were able to gain valuable playing time and experience last year as only Chew and Conner had seen meaningful varsity minutes before last season due to the talented team Alter had in 2020. The Knights will be kicking off their season at Mason as they take on Homestead (IN) at the Ohio Valley Hoops Classic.

Tony Dixon flipped the culture at Dunbar last season and the Wolverines will look to take another step forward heading into Dixon’s second season. A tough postseason loss to Carroll ended the Wolverines season but they return a good group of players. Brothers Antaune Allen and Antone Allen will be paired with Darian Leslie as Dunbar will look to repeat as City League champions and make a deep run into the postseason this year.

After Jonathan Powell entered the starting lineup for C-J, their whole season tuned around. Powell is now regarded as one of the top sophomores in the state as he just recently picked up an offer from the University of Dayton. Despite losing Dan Nauseef and A.J. Solomon from their state semi-final bound team from a year ago, this well coached Eagles squad should still be one of the top teams in Division II in Southwest Ohio this year.

4)Oakwood | 0-0 (0-0, SWBL) |

Oakwood narrowly fell to Trotwood in the postseason last year but although that ended the Lumberjacks season, it showed a lot of hope for this upcoming year. Junior Will Maxwell and senior Keon Wright will be a deadly duo as they head into their second season playing together. Jack Epley will also be a key player heading into this season as he was locked in from three last season. Oakwood will open up against Edgewood on Saturday. They will play Alter in early December and Franklin twice later in the season.

Senior transfer Anthony McComb was nothing short of spectacular during his lone season for the Trotwood-Madison Rams last year. Losing him will also lose a majority of Trotwood’s offensive production from last season. Trotwood’s team will be young this year but they will still have a lot of talent. Sophomore’s Will Yates, Tim Carptener and Delamarr Blanton should all have big seasons this year as this core group will be a scary sight throughout the next couple of seasons.

After finishing 7th in the MAC and going 8-14 in the regular season, Versailles made a very impressive postseason run. Led by junior Jaydon Litten, the Tigers won a district title and made it all the way to the Regional Semi’s before falling to Shawnee. Versailles will return Litten along with Connor Stonebraker who should have a big junior season for the Tigers as well. They will have a delay on their season as the Versailles football team is still alive in the OHSAA football playoffs. They play on Saturday with a trip to the state final on the line.

After a dominant freshman season where he averaged 22.5 PPG, sophomore Mason Shrout will look to take another step forward moving into the WOAC. Preble Shawnee did graduate their top big man in Bryce Singleton, but a new coaching staff will look to lead Preble Shawnee to the top of the WOAC this year. Shrout will look to reach new heights this season as the Arrows take their talents to a new conference in 2022. They’ll have their season delayed due to the success of their football team as they’ll open up their year against Stivers on December 7th.

Springfield Shawnee had a historic year last season as they won their first district title in 44 years. They did graduate Jamon Miller and Drew Mitch who had big seasons. Despite that, the Braves will look to add onto that success as they return junior Zion Crowe and R.J. Griffin who were both big parts of their run last year. They’ll have a solid test early on as they’ll face a D-I opponent in Butler to open their season.

Stivers came into last season with a lot of uncertainties after losing a majority of their back-to-back district champion team. But coming into this year, the Tigers have found their identity and look to make a run this upcoming season. Brendan Crump will be one of the top players in the City League this year and could even have a shot at winning player of the year in the City League. Kyng Aidoo is an extremely athletic player that this team can rely on and Kam Baxter-Bell will look to take another step forward heading into his junior season. Stivers will open up the year with a big time matchup against Trotwood.

Despite losing star players year after year, Anna has still been able to sustain their success very well. Following the departure of Bart Bixler, the Rockets were still able to capture a District Title last season. McKane Finkenbine will be the face of this team in 2022. The guard has lethal range and showed that all throughout last season. The Rockets will be a top team in an always competitive Shelby County League. They will open up at New Knoxville on Friday to begin their new season.

Josh Sagester has coached a lot of talented teams over the years, but this Tri-Village team might be the deepest team he’s had. The Patriots didn’t graduate a single person from their 22-0 regular season last year. They return the reigning CCC player of the year in Layne Sarver and who will be paired with Josh Scantland, Wilson Suggs, and Dalton DeLong. Tri-Village will also play one of the toughest schedules a D4 can schedule. They will open up versus the largest public school in Ohio as they battle Mason. They will also face Badin, Botkins, Waynesville, Meadowdale, Cincinnati Christian and Fort Recovery. With all this talent, the Patriots should have one of their best seasons in recent memory.

After a state title run that captivated the small town of Botkins, the Trojans will look to get back to work with a big test against Jackson Center to open the season. They will have a new head coach after Sean Powell departed for Lima Bath after the great job he did rebuilding this program. The new head coach will be Phil Groves who was the former girls basketball coach at Botkins. Returning a solid team with Jacob Pleiman, Carter Pleiman, Jameson Meyer, and others, Botkins should be a top contender for the SCAL title this season.

Jackson Center’s last SCAL title came back in 2013. The Tigers graduate two-time SCAL player of the year in Aidan Reichert. Reichert was also a three time all-first team player and was the face of this team the past couple of seasons. Despite that, Jackson Center returns a well-coached and balanced team that can shoot the ball extremely well. Kellen Reichert, Carson Regula, They’ll have a tough test right off the bat as they travel to Botkins for a big time SCAL showdown against the defending state champs.

Springfield Catholic Central came up just short of an OHC South title last year and they’ll look to reach that point this season. The Irish will bring back one of the more talented teams in the OHC this year as they have building for this season for some time now. Juniors Tyler Galluch and Cole Ray along with seniors Ashton Young and Ian Galluch will be the leaders on this team as they return a very talented group in 2021. The Irish play Kenton Ridge on the road to open the year and they’ll have Springfield and Anna later in the season to wrap up a solid out-of-conference schedule.

Fort Loramie is another SCAL team that graduated a good amount of talent last season but will still bring back a competitive squad into 2022. The Redskins came up just short to the eventual state champion Botkins Trojans in the District Semifinal’s last year. They will return their second leading scorer in Caleb Maurer who looks to have a big junior year. But they will be without all-SCAL first team selection and their leading scorer from a year ago in Caeleb Meyer. Fort Loramie will start off the year at home against Russia on Friday night.

Fairmont Summer League: Top Performers

Kettering, Ohio — Fairmont hosted their annual Summer League to kickoff June at Trent Arena. The other participating schools along with the Firebirds A and B teams were Alter, Bellbrook, Butler, Carroll, C-J, Fenwick, Graham, Miamisburg, Monroe, Oakwood, Tecumseh, and Waynesville.

A lot of players came into this summer league after a strong spring AAU season. Alter’s Jacob Conner and Oakwood’s Will Maxwell are each good examples of that as they both have had big springs. Conner has been playing for Wildcats Select 17U on the Adidas Circuit and Maxwell has been playing for All-Ohio Red 16U on the EYBL Circuit.

Some other interesting details heading into this particular summer league were the coaching changes. Specifically, the change of head coaches at Fenwick. With Kelven Moss returning to coach at his alma mater at Middletown, it only felt right for Mike Holweger to take the opening at his former alma mater at Fenwick. The new Falcons head coach would receive an early introduction to his team and he would also have to face his old team as Waynesville was also present at Trent Arena.

Jacob Conner has continued to pull in offers this spring after his huge summer last year. He’s playing with Wildcats Select yet again and has been showing off his leaping abilities. Conner had a couple of impressive dunks during Alter’s games and he also showed his improving three-point shot along with his ability to drive and finish around the basket.

Gavin Giesel | G | 2023

Gavin Giesel continues to make huge strides in his game. He’s put up great numbers so far this spring while playing for the Mid-Ohio Pumas. Giesel’s shot continues to improve as he showed off his deep-range ability time after time against Fairmont and Fenwick. Giesel’s three-point shot should be his main weapon this year as he looks to take a big step forward heading into his junior season.

Ryan Chew | G | 2022

Ryan Chew was only able to play half of the season last year but still made a huge impact in the games he was able to play. His quickness on defense leads to a lot of transition baskets and his passing ability while driving is another great asset for this Alter team to have. Chew will be one of four sharpshooting guards that the Knights will return.

Kylan Tucker | G | 2022

With the duo of A.J. Solomon and Dan Nauseef graduating from the Eagles’ 2021 final four run, they will need some younger players to step-up. One of those players might be Kylan Tucker. He looked really comfortable running the point guard position and distributed the ball well as he also scored efficiently during the Eagles’ summer league action.

After another successful run with Hopson Elite, Doucet returns to the Firebirds program as their second leading scorer from a year ago. Dasan’s ability to create space from his defender continues to be his main strength. He uses his physicality and size well and looks to have another solid season for Fairmont.

Anthony Johnson | G | 2022

Anthony Johnson has been a part of Fairmont’s varsity squad since his freshman year and he’s looked even better year after year. Johnson seems more confident in his shot than ever before and his ability to slow down the game and find open teammates should be critical with how young Fairmont’s varsity contributors will be this year.

Anthony Coppock | F | 2022

With a majority of the Vikings’ team from last season graduated, Anthony Coppock will be the man in Miamisburg this season. The 6’2″ forward looked good against Fairmont as he converted on multiple and-ones. His defending ability also looked good as both Jackson McGohan and himself had impressive chase-down blocks.

Will Maxwell | G | 2023

One of the top prospects in Southwest Ohio, Will Maxwell continues to make improvements from his freshman and sophomore season. With a majority returning team, the junior should have a great season for Oakwood. His shot continues to improve and has had a great AAU season already with All-Ohio Red. The junior should continue to pick up more offers in July and heading into next season.

Keon Wright | G | 2022

After moving from Fairmont, Keon Wright had a breakout junior season with Oakwood. He was one of the top scorers on a Lumberjack team who fell to Trotwood in the District Semi-final. Keon showed off his leaping ability and athleticism multiple times as he went in for dunks with other defenders in the paint. With Maxwell and Wright both returning it will be an interesting landscape in D2 next season.

Luke Rubin | G | 2025

Luke is the younger brother of former Oakwood star and current Denison guard, Darren Rubin. Although Luke is undersized he was able to drive the ball effectively against the bigger defenders. He also showed off his range and it should be interesting to see where Rubin starts off the year. If he isn’t a varsity contributor right away he should definitely be a name to watch out for as he could be the future of the Lumberjacks’ team.
