Dayton, Ohio — Thurgood Marshall hosted Beavercreek on Saturday night for an out-of-conference bout against the Beavers. Beavercreek head coach Steve Pittman was an assistant on Darnell Hoskins’ Thurgood Marshall teams for seven years. Beavercreek got off to a quick start and didn’t look back as Gabe Phillips’ 24 points and Adam Duvall’s 19 points led ‘Creek to the 82-37 win.
Beavercreek fell 51-45 to Springboro on Friday night as they shot 35% from the field to open up GWOC play. Their senior duo of 6’8″ Gabe Phillips and 6’7″ Adam Duvall will once again lead this team in 2022. Their backcourt led by Kyle Putnam, Gabe Aga, and Jamir Hymes will also be a big factor in the Beavers’ success this season.

Thurgood Marshall finished 7-5 last year and second in the Dayton City League. Reigning City League Co-Player of the Year Ronald Smith will look to the lead the Cougars once again as this team looks to make some noise in Anthony Petty’s second season.

Edward Quesada got Thurgood on the board first with a corner three but Beavercreek’s offense would explode after that. Beavercreek exploited the obvious mismatch down low as Gabe Phillips finished the first quarter with 15 points. Kyle Putnam added on 5 points as the Beavers led 28-7 at the end of the first.

Beavercreek’s balanced scoring attack in the second quarter saw them jump out to a 44-21 lead at the half. Ronald Smith hit an and-one jumper and a three for Thurgood but the Cougars still trailed by twenty-three points at halftime.
Duvall, Aga, and Hymes helped the Beavers take a thirty point lead to begin the second half. This started the running clock as ‘Creek was scoring at will. Ronald Smith’s layup ended ‘Creek’s 12-0 run to begin the half. Beavercreek’s lead was extended to forty points as Duvall continued to take over and scored the ball a variety of ways. Beavercreek led 72-28 at the end of the quarter as they outscored Thurgood 28-7 in the third quarter.
Adam Duvall and Gabe Phillips continued to dominate in the final quarter as the Beavers ran away with the 82-37 win. Gabe Phillips had a double double with 24 points and 14 rebounds and Adam Duvall also had a double double with 19 points and 13 rebounds. Kyle Putnam reached double figures with 11 points and Gabe Aga added on 10 points.

Ronald Smith had a team high 10 points for Thurgood as they fall to 0-4 on the year. ‘Creek moves back over .500 as they improve to 2-1 (0-1, GWOC) and will look to make it two in a row when they travel to Centerville next Friday to battle the reigning state champs.
