Springboro, Ohio — Dayton’s class of 2019 was stacked with many unforgettable talents, spanning from Texas A&M’s Andre Gordon (Sidney) to Green Bay’s Amari Davis (Trotwood).

But, one player you might not remember is Springboro‘s Garett Powell. Surrounded by Ohio Northern‘s Michael Berner and Willeon Yates, Powell led the Springboro Panthers to a 11-13 record his senior season.

Powell served as a three-year varsity member before reclassifying to the class of 2020 and committing to play a post-grad year at Shooting 4 Greatness (S4G) Academy.

The academy located in Raleigh, North Carolina picked Powell up after he initially committed to Delta State (D2) in Mississippi. Powell had offers from Holy Cross College, Thomas More, Christian Brothers, Florida College, and Delta St. before committing to S4G.

Powell might’ve been hidden under the abundance of talent in GWOC his senior season, but playing for one of Ohio’s top AAU teams, Apex, now known as Midwest, helped the 6’7″ forward in his recruitment process.

Powell was frequently featured in Prep Hoops’ articles and classified as one of Ohio’s top players in the class of 2019. Prep Network senior editor, Anthony Garcia, described Powell his senior year as, “a talented and versatile forward. Impressing with his skill and versatility. Strong body. Playing as their primary ball-handler and making plays on the drive. Added a pull-up 3-pointer. Good rebounder.”

In his final run with Springboro, he finished top 20 in conference scoring (14.2 ppg), top 25 in passing (2.9 apg), top 15 in blocks (1.2 bpg), and 9th in rebounding (7.1 rpg). He led the panthers in scoring, while placing runner up in assists and rebounds.

With Powell’s post grad year having come to an end, he decided to continue his career at Grayson College (NJCAA D1) in Denison, Texas.

He will play under head coach Scott Monarch. Coach Monarch previously coached at Marquette (NCAA D1) where he recruited and coached Jimmy Butler & Jae Crowder, along with many other professionals.

Will Garret Powell follow in their footsteps?
